AI Text Forensics Court
Help Desk Notice No. 1
IBefore the hearing
- Website: paste text on the home page, or upload a Word, PDF, PowerPoint, Excel, Markdown or plain text file, then press "Begin trial" to check it paragraph by paragraph.
- Chrome extension: on any web page, click the scales icon in the toolbar to open the side panel, then click "Check this page". Results are highlighted on the page itself: teal for paragraphs that lean human, red for paragraphs that lean AI. To check only part of a page, select the text first, then click "Check selected text" or use the context menu.
- The ruling: shows the overall AI probability, the share of AI paragraphs, the AI probability of each paragraph and, when the text leans AI, whether it most resembles ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini.
IIFrequently asked questions
- Is this AI detector free?
- Yes. There is no sign-up and no usage limit. Detection runs in your browser, not on a server.
- Can it detect ChatGPT?
- Yes. The model was trained on English and Chinese text generated by ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and other AI models, and when a text leans AI it estimates which one it most resembles. AI text that a person has heavily rewritten is harder to catch.
- Can I use it to check essays or papers?
- You can upload Word or PDF files and see which paragraphs look most like AI, so you know where to look closer. The result is only a probability estimate. Before concluding that a student used AI, weigh it with other evidence such as drafts or a conversation about the work.
- How accurate is it on English text?
- On the English test sets, about 3% of human writing is flagged as AI, and nearly all AI text is caught. Two kinds of human writing are flagged more often: academic writing by non-native English speakers (about 1 in 6 in our tests) and plain encyclopedia-style prose. Please keep this in mind before drawing conclusions about a student or colleague.
- Why does the first run take longer?
- The first run downloads the detection model from Hugging Face, about 390 MB on a computer. It is then kept in the browser cache, so later visits start right away. If your computer supports WebGPU, the graphics card is used automatically.
- The extension says it has no permission to read this tab
- If you switch tabs or pages while the side panel is open, the browser withdraws the temporary permission. Click "Allow reading pages" in the side panel and accept, and you can check any tab from then on. The extension still reads the current tab only when you start a check.
- Which pages can't be checked?
- Built-in browser pages (starting with chrome://) and Chrome Web Store pages cannot be read by extensions. Pages with too little text show "Not enough text on this page"; select the text and check the selection instead.
- What does "Mixed authorship" mean?
- Some paragraphs in the document look human-written and others look AI-generated, such as a human original with an AI-written summary added. The ruling estimates how likely it is that AI was involved and what share of the content appears AI-generated, and marks each paragraph.
- Can the ruling be used as evidence?
- No. The ruling is a probability estimate from a model and can be wrong. Very short texts, AI text that a person has heavily rewritten, formulaic human writing (regulations, tables, templates) and English written by non-native speakers are more likely to be misjudged. Treat the result as a lead, never as the sole basis for any penalty.
- Does it work on phones?
- The website works in mobile browsers and automatically downloads a smaller phone model. The extension only works in desktop Chrome and Edge.
- Is my text uploaded?
- No. Everything is examined on your device. See the Privacy Policy.
- The model fails to download or nothing happens
- Make sure you can reach huggingface.co, then reload the page or close and reopen the side panel. If it still fails, clear this site's browser data, try again, and report it as described in Section III.
IIIRequests and complaints
To report a bug, dispute a ruling, suggest a feature or ask about privacy, open a new discussion on the Hugging Face model discussion board. You can also use the developer contact on the Chrome Web Store page.
When reporting a wrong ruling, please include:
- Whether you used the website or the extension, and your browser and operating system versions.
- The verdict and AI probability shown on the ruling.
- Where the text came from (for example, the year a person wrote it, or which AI tool produced it). Do not post the text itself if it contains personal or confidential information.
